Booking an in-home session...
is a wonderful way to make your photo session more intimate and avoid weather that is less than ideal. There are however, a few more details to consider besides making sure your home is clean and tidy.
First, let's talk about lighting. Make sure you book your session for the time of day that your home gets the most sunlight. If you have sheer curtains, make sure they are drawn. These are a great way to diffuse the sunlight coming in. Also, be sure to turn off all artificial lights. Your photographer will thank you! If you don't have a lot of windows, you should choose the room that gets the most natural light.
Another thing to consider is clothes. When having a session at home, most people go shoeless. You need to decide if you want socks on or off, and it's a good idea if everyone does the same. If only one person is wearing socks, that may be a little distracting in your images. If you do decide to wear socks, make sure that they are neutral colors (white or black) and that everyone is wearing the same color.
Next, when it comes to in-home sessions, it can be nice to have an activity planned. For example, if you want your photos taken in the kitchen, you could plan to bake cookies together. If you want the session to take place primarily in the living room, you could play a board game together. Planning an activity isn't a must, but it can help for those who don't usually like having photos taken. You will make special memories and have them recorded!
Lastly, if you have an activity planned or want to use specific rooms (bedroom, nursery, etc.), be sure to let your photographer know. Most of the time, photographers are able to scout locations before the session. That's not the case when it is your home. So, the more info you can provide your photographer about what your plans and expectations are, the better!
