Planning for a baby can be stressful...

maternity photos should not add to that. This should be a luxury experience that will remind you of this special, short-lived moment in your life.

There are many types of photographers out there with a variety of styles and packages. It can all be overwhelming, especially if you don't really know what you're looking for. There's more to consider besides price. My hope is that this list of questions to ask will help you in your maternity photographer search.

  • Do you offer a client closet?

If you want to utilize this feature that some photographers offer, you will also want to ask about available sizes and whether or not it's included or costs an additional fee.

  • What does a session include?

Some photographers include maternity closet access, some don't. Some include digitals, some include physical products. Some offer discounts or bundling if you plan to book a newborn session with them. It's good to know what you can expect to receive for your money.

  • How many outfits can I wear?

Some moms-to-be want the "glam" photos as well as some more natural "jeans and tee" style photos. Some may want to wear several different maternity gowns. Whatever your style is, if you want to wear more than one outfit, be sure that your photographer knows! They will need to budget enough time and pick a location that is conducive to wardrobe changes.

  • What kind of newborn sessions do you offer?

Most people book their newborn sessions with the same photographer who does their maternity photos. It's important to make sure you know what type of newborn session your photographer offers. Here are a few things to consider: Do you want posed (highly edited, usually studio) or lifestyle (natural, flexible location possibilities)? Location- Do you want photos done in a studio, outside, in-home? Does your photographer offer in-home?

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you plan to have posed newborn photos, make sure that the photographer has had proper newborn photography education. Some of these poses can be dangerous if not done by someone who knows what they are doing!

  • Should I bring any props?

Your photographer may have some great ideas for incorporating baby clothes, shoes, etc. into your images. Be sure to ask if he or she has any suggestions. Also, if you have ideas, tell your photographer what you're thinking!

  • When is the best time to schedule my maternity and newborn sessions?

There is usually a window of time that is ideal for these sessions, so be sure you don't procrastinate in booking.
