Between doctor appointments and preparing for baby's arrival, if you are expecting, you've already got a lot on your plate. Documenting this special time in your life should not add on to the stress. To help you out, I've compiled a list of things to ask when you are looking for a photographer to capture your maternity and newborn photos.

"When is the best time to book my session?"
Your photographer may have a different answer for you, but I recommend scheduling your maternity session for when you are 30-35 weeks along in your pregnancy. As for newborn photos, most photographers recommend scheduling these to take place within the first two weeks. The reason for this is because baby will usually sleep the whole time, making it much easier to get all of the desired shots.
"Do you offer a client closet?"
Some photographers offer maternity gowns as a part of their client closet. If this is something that is important to you, be sure to ask if it's included in your session.
"Should I bring any props?"
My answer to this one...ABSOLUTELY! Just let your photographer know if you plan to bring anything so they can prepare. Some things you may consider bringing are ultrasound photos, a cute onesie, a blanket or stuffy that is sentimental, a Moses basket (for newborn photos), etc.
"How many outfits can I wear?"
Some people may wish to change gowns, or have some gown and some casual photos. It's important to bring this up with your photographer beforehand, so you can ensure plenty of time. Another thing to consider with this one is location. If you plan to have more than one wardrobe change, check with the photographer to make sure you will have a place to change your clothes.

"What style of newborn photography do you offer?"
You also need to ask yourself what style you want? Studio or lifestyle? Both of these are beautiful, but are very different styles. Studio sessions usually include swaddling and specific poses, along with special lighting. Lifestyle is less "posed" and more about capturing natural moments of your new little family. It's important to find out which style your photographer offers.

"Do you offer any special deals if I book a maternity AND newborn session?"
Even if you don't see a "bundled" price when looking at the photographer's pricing guide, it never hurts to ask!
What do you think of this list? Are there any questions I left out? I'd be curious to hear what others look for in their photographer for these types of sessions.
