Your senior portrait session should feel like you, not like a copy of someone else's senior pictures.
Whether you're planning your senior portraits in Keller, Southlake, Grapevine, Fort Worth, or somewhere else around the DFW area, a little preparation can make your session more relaxed, comfortable, and personal.
The goal isn't to show up looking like a completely different person. It's to create portraits that capture this exciting season of your life and artwork you'll actually love seeing on your walls years from now.
Here are a few things you can do before your senior portrait session to make the most of your experience.
1. Start With What Feels Like You
Before you start planning outfits or Pinterest boards, think about what you want your senior portraits to say about you.
Are you:
- Sporty and energetic?
- Classic and timeless?
- Trendy and fashion-forward?
- Quiet and artistic?
- Outdoorsy and adventurous?
- Fun and full of personality?
Your senior pictures don't have to look like everyone else's.
If you love dressing up, let's incorporate that. If jeans and a favorite sweater feel more like you, that's perfectly okay too. Your portraits should reflect your personality and this particular season of your life.
2. Choose Outfits That Make You Feel Confident
Most senior sessions include multiple outfits, which gives us the opportunity to create a variety of portraits.
When choosing what to wear, think about:
Bring a variety of looks
Consider bringing a combination of:
- A dressier outfit
- A casual outfit
- Something that represents your personality or interests
- A favorite outfit you always feel great in
If you're involved in a sport, play an instrument, love dance, have a favorite hobby, or have something else that's an important part of your life, we can often incorporate it into your session in a natural way.
Don't forget the little things
Make sure your clothes are clean, wrinkle-free, and ready to go.
Check for:
- Loose threads
- Missing buttons
- Wrinkles
- Stains
- Pet hair
- Scuffed shoes
And don't forget the accessories! Jewelry, hats, jackets, shoes, and other small details can completely change the feel of an outfit.
3. Don't Make a Major Hair Change Right Before Your Session
This is not the time to experiment with a completely new haircut or color.
If you want a haircut, schedule it about a week before your session rather than the day before. That gives your hair a little time to settle and gives you an opportunity to make any small adjustments.
The same goes for brows, tanning, or other beauty appointments.
You want to feel like yourself when you look back at these portraits years from now.
4. Plan Your Hair and Makeup Around Your Style
Professional hair and makeup isn't required for beautiful senior portraits, but if it's something you enjoy, it can be a fun part of getting ready.
Whether you do your own makeup or have it professionally done, I recommend keeping it consistent with how you normally look.
You want to feel polished, not like you're wearing someone else's face.
If you don't normally wear much makeup, you don't need a dramatic makeup look just because you're having your senior portraits taken.
5. Get Plenty of Rest the Night Before
This one sounds simple, but it makes a difference.
Try to get a good night's sleep before your session, drink plenty of water, and eat a normal meal beforehand.
You don't want to arrive hungry, exhausted, or dehydrated.
Your only job during your session should be to relax and enjoy yourself.
6. Bring the Things That Make Your Session Personal
Your senior portraits should tell your story.
If there are meaningful items you'd like to incorporate, bring them along.
Maybe it's:
- Your varsity jacket
- A musical instrument
- A favorite book
- Ballet shoes
- A sports uniform
- Your car
- A family heirloom
- Something related to a hobby
- A college sweatshirt
Not everything needs to make it into the final portraits. We can decide together what makes sense once we're there.
Sometimes the smallest details end up being the things you'll treasure most.
7. Don't Stress About Knowing How to Pose
This is probably one of the biggest things I want seniors to know:
You do not have to know how to pose. That's my job!
I don't expect you to arrive knowing exactly what to do with your hands, where to look, or how to stand.
Instead of putting you into a series of stiff poses, I'll guide you through movement and natural interactions so your portraits feel relaxed and genuine.
Some of my favorite images happen in between the poses.
So if you're nervous about being in front of the camera, don't worry. You're not alone, and you don't have to figure it out yourself.
8. Bring Comfortable Shoes for Moving Between Locations
If we're exploring multiple locations during your session, consider bringing comfortable shoes for walking between spots.
You can always change into the shoes you want photographed once we get to the location.
Comfort matters because the more comfortable you are, the more relaxed you'll look in your portraits.
9. Don't Forget Your Hands and Nails
Your hands can end up in more portraits than you realize!
A few days before your session, take a look at your nails and make sure they're clean and ready for close-up portraits.
If you get your nails done, consider choosing a color that complements your outfits rather than one that will compete with them.
Simple and timeless is always a great choice.
10. Talk With Your Photographer About What Matters to You
Before your session, think about what you absolutely want to remember about this time in your life.
Maybe you're heading off to college.
Maybe you've spent the last four years playing a sport.
Maybe your best friends have been a huge part of your high school experience.
Maybe you're graduating from a homeschool program.
Maybe you're simply excited about what comes next.
Tell me those things.
The more I know about you, the better I can create a session that feels personal rather than generic.
11. Trust the Process
You don't need to know exactly how every image is going to look before we begin.
That's part of what I'm there for.
We'll choose locations, outfits, and ideas that fit you, and I'll guide you throughout the session.
Your job is simply to show up, be yourself, and enjoy this milestone.
12. Think Beyond the Digital File
Your senior year is a milestone worth remembering beyond the screen of your phone.
After your session, we'll have the opportunity to turn your favorite portraits into tangible artwork you can actually live with.
Instead of letting your favorite images sit on a hard drive or get buried in your camera roll, imagine seeing your senior portraits displayed in your home every day.
That's why I believe senior photography should be about more than simply delivering a gallery of digital images.
It's about creating portraits that become part of your family's story.
