Sometimes, Homeschool Looks Like this...

When people hear that we homeschool, one of the first questions they usually ask is: “So what does that actually look like?” The truth is, there isn’t just one way to do it. Every family finds their own rhythm, and for us, homeschooling has become a blend of structure, flexibility, and a lot of learning outside the box.

Last year, our days included a little backyard gardening project that grew into something bigger than we expected. The kids planted (with the help of their dad), tended, and harvested vegetables, and then decided to sell their produce to neighbors and friends. Through that process, they not only learned about how food grows but also got a real-life lesson in economics—pricing their items, making change, and understanding supply and demand. It was such a fun (and delicious!) way to combine hands-on learning with practical life skills.

Some homeschool days are heavy on bookwork and chores, and while the tasks themselves may feel ordinary, the photos don’t have to be. Even in the simple, everyday moments, there’s beauty worth capturing.

My son recently began a woodworking project with his grandpa, building a gun rack. Along the way, he’s learning how to handle all kinds of tools, practicing his math skills in real and practical ways, and most importantly, making memories with his grandpa that he’ll carry for a lifetime.

Spending time outdoors is an important part of our homeschool. In the winter, falconry takes center stage, giving the kids a chance to learn about wildlife and biology in a hands-on, exciting way. It’s not just science, it’s adventure.

Of course, no homeschool would be complete without the arts. My daughter loves to paint and write stories, often skipping around the yard as she dreams up new ideas and characters. Her creativity fills our days with color and imagination. My son has taken to playing the guitar. He’s still a little too shy to play for an audience, so for now he practices with headphones, filling his own quiet world with music. These creative outlets not only round out their education but also give them space to express themselves in ways that are uniquely their own.
