Bringing home a new baby is exciting, exhausting, and often a little chaotic. Between feedings, diaper changes, and adjusting to a new routine, the thought of packing everyone up for a photo session can feel overwhelming.

That's one reason many families choose an in-home newborn session. Instead of loading the car, worrying about nap schedules, and hoping everyone arrives in a good mood, I come to you. Your home becomes the backdrop for documenting this season exactly as it is.

If you've never had an in-home newborn session before, here's a look at what you can expect.

Before the Session

After our initial phone call together, we will get together for your in-person consultation where we'll talk through all the details ahead of time. I'll help you choose clothing that photographs well and coordinate outfits for the entire family. The goal is for everyone to look put together without feeling overly matched or uncomfortable.

Many parents worry that their house isn't "photo ready." Please don't.

I am looking for good light and genuine connection, not a perfectly decorated home. Most sessions take place in just a few rooms, usually the nursery, primary bedroom, and living room. Before I arrive, I may suggest clearing a few items from nightstands or countertops, but there is no need to deep clean your entire house. You just had a baby. I promise I understand.

When I Arrive

The first thing I do is take a quick look around your home to find the best natural light.

Every home is different. Some nurseries have beautiful window light while others may photograph better from the primary bedroom or living room. I build the session around the spaces that will photograph best.

Then we take things one step at a time. There is no rush. If baby needs to eat, we stop. If baby needs a diaper change, we stop. If an older sibling needs a snack break, we make that happen too.

The session moves at your family's pace.

Family Photos Come First

I typically begin with the entire family together. These images often become favorites because they show everyone adjusting to their new roles. Parents are holding their brand-new baby. Siblings are curious and excited. Sometimes they're a little unsure of what to think about this tiny person who suddenly moved into their house.

That's real life, and those moments matter.

I'll guide you through simple prompts that encourage interaction and connection. The result feels natural and relaxed. Don't worry, we will get a few of everyone looking at the camera and smiling, too.

Individual Parent Photos

After family images, we'll spend time photographing each parent with baby. These are often some of the most meaningful photographs from the session. New moms spend months carrying and caring for their babies before finally meeting them face-to-face. New dads are settling into a role that often changes them in ways they never expected. Capturing those early interactions becomes more valuable with every passing year.

Sibling Photos

If older siblings are part of the session, we'll make sure they have plenty of opportunities to be included.

Young children rarely want to sit still for long, and that's completely normal.

Instead of forcing poses, I'll work with their personality. We might have them snuggle baby on the bed, peek into the crib, hold tiny fingers, or simply sit close together.

Some of the sweetest images happen when siblings are just being themselves.

Baby-Only Images

Once family portraits are complete, we'll focus on baby.

Lifestyle newborn photography is very different from posed studio newborn photography. While I do have a few wraps for swaddling, I don't bring a bunch of props, buckets, or complicated poses. Instead, I photograph your baby naturally; sleeping, stretching, yawning, looking around, or resting in your arms. These images preserve what your baby actually looked like during those first days at home.

The Tiny Details

One part of every newborn session that parents love is the detail photographs: tiny eyelashes, wrinkly fingers, little toes, soft baby fuzz, the shape of their lips. Those details change faster than most parents realize. Within a few months, many of them are already different. Photographing them now helps preserve memories that are easy to forget with time.

What If My Baby Won't Sleep?

Many parents ask this question before their session. The answer is simple: that's okay. Your baby does not need to sleep for beautiful photographs. Some newborns sleep through the entire session. Others spend most of the session awake and alert (that was my daughter). Both are completely normal.

In fact, awake newborns often make eye contact and show expressions that parents love seeing in their images.

There is no "perfect" newborn session. Every baby is different.

After the Session

After your session, I'll carefully select and edit the best images. A few weeks later, we'll meet for your ordering appointment where you'll see your images for the first time and choose your favorite artwork for your home.

Whether you decide on wall portraits, an album, or gift prints for family members, the goal is the same: creating something tangible that can be enjoyed long after the newborn stage has passed.

Thinking About an In-Home Newborn Session?

The newborn days often feel long while you're living them, but they pass surprisingly fast.

An in-home newborn session allows you to document this chapter without adding more stress to your schedule. No packing the diaper bag. No rushing out the door. No worrying whether baby will cooperate. Just your family, your home, and the people who matter most.
